New Year's Eve, whatever is this fuss?

Our first year, our first home. We hadn't even bought a bedroom set yet. Jean was in Tennessee with her mom. I was with my parents on our first New Year's Eve. Our first New Year's kiss was on our second New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve
Whatever is this fuss?
People need a reason to drink
Posting a calendar may be enough

Leave Afghanistan? Not happening now
More maniacs in congress--nothing to blow horns about
Promises people make today

Will wither like last year's
We'll be miswriting check dates a while

Nobody knows when Day 1 actually was
We can pick any days, or no days
Or all days to celebrate
Liquor merchants would love that

The one we kiss at midnight
Might not be here to kiss next year
Maybe a new one, maybe no one
You might be mistaken altogether
About getting to kiss anybody next year

So if you have someone to kiss
This year, kiss them as if it were
Your last kiss ever
Even if you're sure you'll
See them tomorrow

If once you had someone to kiss
And now do not, remember
Your best kisses ever
Celebrate every day
Your best kisses ever
