PHYSICS GEEKS ALERT--I watched ATOM over the weekend, a 3 part series from BBC4 about the last 100 years (or so) in physics. Rather than the usual approach "Here it is, folks. All neat and tidy. Any questions?" they instead approached the discoveries as the scientists of the periods did: here's what we know; here's the new problems; and here's our best explanations--forgive us if they don't hold up. In short, as a history of science.
While the substance is great the technique is atrocious. It looked like the whole thing was shot with videocassette camera through a toilet tube. As a result only the center of the image is appropriately bright and the rest is frustratingly faded to black--physics seen through a keyhole. And the usual sin of replaying the same footage. A rose with thorns
