Feast of Beltane. Ours didn't have a pool. But the lady's dress was spot on. |
I thought I had a better pic for my May pole. Imagine green and spring as in the image above-left. |
The guy I sort of bought my house
From had a Wikipedia entry which
Was actually quite flattering to him
Self-serving if not self-submitted.
I printed it out soon after I found it
But on later searches found that it
Had been removed for “insufficient
Significance.” I never met him. The
House was deeded to his main
Squeeze of his later years. She told
Me he died of complications from
Drug abuse. Aside from the
Aspersions to be cast Wikipedia’s
Way the elision seems to support
Wiki’s claim to self-correction.
He was unique in the usual sense
That each of us is unique but atop
That were other factors that
Marked him unique into which
I shall not venture tonight. What
I find noteworthy is the unreliability
Of our own and the world’s
Evaluation of our significance.
His father had been a politician
Of better than slight fame in
The county’s growth during the
Late ‘50s, early ’60’s, and a
Short court in the neighborhood
Bears the father’s name—no home
Addresses—an alleyway to
Garages on adjacent streets. The
Neighborhood abounds with
Tales of his parties based on
His belief in wood nymphs,
Druidic practices, and the easy
Availability of good weed.
There’s an old street pole in
My patio-like backyard, both
The pole and the bricks garnered
No doubt from county street work.
Attendance at his Maypole blowouts
Was boosted by the promises
(Often fulfilled I’m told) of
Scantily-clad young nymphs
(See above) prancing to the
Hypnotic thrum of Druidic
(See above) drummers. How
Were they able to reproduce
The music of the wood-ancients?
Who questioned it—the air being
Thick with second-hand highs?
Sometimes the reputations get
Enhanced in the retellings. This
Story is better than anything he
Put in Wikipedia. Maybe I’ll
Be the last to know of these
Orgies—so many of his
Contemporaries having already
Left this vale of tears (Could
Have been the smoke).
I may have written of him
Before. If so, please excuse.
I’m getting older. Besides,
The story only gets better.
Who’ll be left to question it?
