Another window at the Heyse Bldg. Note: rock on sill, hole in screening. |
Sure looked like a rat. Careful observation shows it's a bird. Note the hole in the screening. |
Correction 20160419: On second
Glance “Ralphie” the rat turned out
To be another of God’s creatures—
A wren whose misfortune is easy
To explain and similarly sad. I
Include a second image, another
Window at the Heyse Building,
Which indicates a similar event.
Rather than all that folderol about
A UWR (Unknown Window Raiser)
And a rat trying to get a view of
Franklin Circle, closer inspection
Reveals the actual happenstance.
As I promised yesterday that I
Would place an up-close and
Personal photo of the rat to make
My speculation credible, the
Pictures taken today explain
Both the original misperception
And what really happened as
Any fool (?) can plainly see.
Clearly the bird resembles
The foreparts of a rat—teeth,
Eyes, head—whose body has been
Guillotined betwixt the sill and
Guillotined betwixt the sill and
The sash. Give me that at least.
But since it’s only the corpse
Of a wren caught between the
Window frame and the wire
Screening, out goes the UWR
And all that attendant drama.
So how did the bird get in
There? He/she hopped onto
The wire of the hole above
And fell into the space. He
Or she (she or he?) was unable
By flapping to rise back to the
Exit and expired on the sill.* I
Can find this believable in
That another window on the
Same level to the left has a
Rock on its sill with a hole
In the screening above. With
A blog title The Whole Truth
And Nothing But . . . I had no
Choice but to return today with
The real truth however shabbily
It compares to the fairy tale I
Wove yesterday. Even as I
Discovered my error I thought
“How did these holes get here
In the first place,” and “How
Did the rock break the screen
But not the window glass?”
Which led me to the speculation
“Who would stand here for the
Better part of a day trying to
Throw a stone through the small
Hole in the screen?” Right now
You're probably wondering,
“How much time has this
Dude got on his hands to
Dude got on his hands to
Think about shit like this?”
You’ve got to understand
I’m retired but I’m not dead.
I have the time both to notice
I’m retired but I’m not dead.
I have the time both to notice
And to think about small
Discrepancies in the nature
Of things. Not to place myself
On a plane with greater thinkers,
But Copernicus, Galileo, Newton,
And Einstein thought long and
Hard about incidental deviations
To momentous effect. It’s my
Nature, and it’s served me
Damn well through the years,
Thank you.
Damn well through the years,
Thank you.
